Aux 2 Unit 8 Refrigeration General overview Quiz

Correct Answer:
C) Superheated vapor

Explanation:
After compression, the refrigerant exits the compressor as a high-pressure, high-temperature superheated vapor before entering the condenser.

Correct Answer:
B) It absorbs heat and evaporates, becoming superheated vapor

Explanation:
In the evaporator, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the surroundings, causing it to evaporate and become a superheated vapor.

Correct Answer:
B) The temperature at which the refrigerant condenses or boils

Explanation:
The saturation temperature is the temperature at which the refrigerant exists in equilibrium between its liquid and vapor states, such as during boiling or condensation.

Correct Answer:
B) The refrigerant releases heat and condenses into a sub-cooled liquid

Explanation:
In the condenser, the superheated vapor releases heat to the surroundings, condensing into a liquid that is often further sub-cooled before entering the expansion valve.

Correct Answer:
B) After leaving the condenser

Explanation:
Sub-cooling occurs after the refrigerant leaves the condenser. This ensures that the refrigerant is entirely in the liquid phase before it enters the expansion valve for pressure reduction.

Correct Answer:
B) To cool the refrigerant by reducing pressure, causing partial evaporation

Explanation:
The expansion valve reduces the pressure of the liquid refrigerant, which causes it to partially evaporate and cool, preparing it for heat absorption in the evaporator.

Correct Answer:
B) The refrigerant is heated beyond its boiling point and remains a vapor

Explanation:
Superheating refers to the process where the refrigerant is heated above its boiling point while remaining in the vapor phase, ensuring that no liquid remains.

Correct Answer:
C) The refrigerant is cooled below its condensation temperature while remaining a liquid

Explanation:
Sub-cooling occurs when the liquid refrigerant is cooled below its saturation temperature, ensuring that no vapor is present before it enters the expansion valve.

Correct Answer:
C) Compression increases the pressure and temperature of the gas

Explanation:
When a refrigerant gas is compressed, its pressure and temperature increase, preparing it to release heat when it enters the condenser.

Correct Answer:
B) On the discharge line of the compressor

Explanation:
The high pressure cut-out is located on the discharge line of the compressor to monitor and prevent excessive pressure that could damage the system.

Correct Answer:
B) It must be manually reset using a button or switch on the control panel

Explanation:
High pressure cut-outs often require manual resetting through a button or switch to ensure that the operator is aware of the pressure fault and takes corrective action.

Correct Answer:
B) Heat flows from hot to cold when there is a temperature difference

Explanation:
One of the basic principles of refrigeration is that heat flows naturally from a higher temperature to a lower temperature, which is utilized to transfer heat out of a space that needs to be cooled.

Correct Answer:
C) Near the suction side of the compressor

Explanation:
The low pressure cut-out is typically located on the suction side of the compressor to monitor the pressure of the refrigerant and prevent damage from excessively low suction pressures.

Correct Answer:
A) By manually pressing a reset button

Explanation:
The low pressure cut-out usually needs to be reset manually to ensure that the operator is aware of a potential issue and can take appropriate measures to address it.

Correct Answer:
B) Evaporation absorbs heat, causing a cooling effect

Explanation:
When a liquid refrigerant evaporates, it absorbs heat from its surroundings, creating a cooling effect. This principle is fundamental in the operation of refrigeration systems.

Correct Answer:
B) The cut-out must be manually reset to resume operation

Explanation:
Once the high pressure cut-out is triggered, most systems require a manual reset to ensure that the operator investigates and addresses the cause of the high pressure condition before restarting.

Correct Answer:
B) To protect the compressor from damage due to excessive discharge pressure

Explanation:
The high pressure cut-out is designed to prevent damage to the compressor and other components by stopping the system when the discharge pressure exceeds safe operational limits.

Correct Answer:
B) To prevent potential damage to the condenser

Explanation:
The high pressure cut-out prevents excessive pressure that could lead to damage or failure of the condenser, protecting the system's integrity.

Correct Answer:
B) Blockage or insufficient airflow in the condenser

Explanation:
Blockages or poor airflow through the condenser can cause heat to build up, leading to high pressure in the discharge line and triggering the high pressure cut-out.

Correct Answer:
C) It stops the compressor when the discharge pressure exceeds a set limit

Explanation:
The high pressure cut-out monitors the pressure in the discharge line and stops the compressor when the pressure goes beyond the set safe threshold, preventing potential damage to the system.

Correct Answer:
C) The discharge line of the compressor

Explanation:
The high pressure cut-out is installed on the discharge line to monitor and control the pressure level, ensuring it does not exceed safe operational limits.

Correct Answer:
C) To reduce the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant before it enters the evaporator

Explanation:
The expansion valve reduces the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant, allowing it to become a low-temperature mixture of liquid and vapor, ready to absorb heat in the evaporator.

Correct Answer:
C) It absorbs heat from the surroundings and evaporates into a vapor

Explanation:
In the evaporator, the low-pressure liquid refrigerant absorbs heat from its surroundings, causing it to evaporate and turn into a low-pressure vapor.

Correct Answer:
C) It removes the heat absorbed in the evaporator and converts the refrigerant to a liquid

Explanation:
The condenser's function is to expel the heat absorbed by the refrigerant during the evaporation process and convert the high-pressure vapor into a liquid.

Correct Answer:
C) It releases heat and condenses into a liquid

Explanation:
In the condenser, the refrigerant releases heat to the surroundings, allowing it to condense from a vapor to a high-pressure liquid.

Correct Answer:
B) Between the condenser and evaporator

Explanation:
The expansion valve is positioned between the condenser and evaporator to regulate the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator at the proper pressure and temperature.

Correct Answer:
D) It absorbs heat, providing the cooling effect needed in the system

Explanation:
The evaporator is where the cooling effect takes place as the refrigerant absorbs heat from the environment or space being cooled, evaporating in the process.

Correct Answer:
B) To the condenser

Explanation:
The high-pressure, high-temperature refrigerant vapor is sent to the condenser, where it releases heat and condenses into a liquid.

Correct Answer:
C) To compress the low-pressure refrigerant vapor and increase its pressure and temperature

Explanation:
The compressor's role is to take low-pressure refrigerant vapor from the evaporator and compress it to a high pressure and temperature, preparing it for heat release in the condenser.
