Aux 2 Unit 14 Petrol, LPG, volatile fules and Fuel lockers Q1 Answer
With reference to Open Flame Gas Installation, describe the safety requirements for the installation of EACH of the following: (a) cylinders and attachments;(5) (b) fittings and pipework.(5)
(a) Cylinders and attachments (5 marks)
Location and ventilation
Cylinders must be stored upright, in a well-ventilated area, away from heat sources, machinery spaces, and open flames.
They should not be located in accommodation or machinery compartments.
Securing and protection
Cylinders must be securely fastened to prevent movement or tipping, using proper clamps or brackets.
They should be protected from mechanical damage and shielded from direct sunlight or high temperatures.
Accessibility and isolation
Cylinder valves and regulators must be readily accessible for operation and emergency shut-off.
A main isolating valve should be fitted close to the cylinders and clearly marked.
Connections and regulators
All connections must be gas-tight, made with approved fittings compatible with the type of gas.
Pressure-reducing regulators must be of the correct type, fitted directly to the cylinder valve, and maintained in good condition.
Marking and inspection
Cylinders must be clearly marked with the type of gas, test dates, and pressure ratings.
Regular inspection must be carried out to check for corrosion, leaks, or damage, and cylinders must not be used beyond their test date.
(b) Fittings and pipework (5 marks)
Material and construction
All gas piping must be made of seamless copper or approved steel tubing, suitable for the gas type and operating pressure.
Flexible hoses should only be used where necessary and must be of approved flame-resistant material.
Routing
Pipework should be run in open, well-ventilated spaces, protected from mechanical damage, and kept clear of electrical wiring and heat sources.
Joints should be minimised and accessible for inspection.
Testing
After installation or maintenance, the complete system must be pressure-tested for leaks using inert gas or soapy solution—never with a flame.
Isolation and valves
Manual shut-off valves must be fitted at each appliance and at key points along the line for isolation during maintenance or emergencies.
Identification and maintenance
Pipe runs must be clearly labelled “LPG” or “Gas” with direction of flow.
Routine inspection and leak testing must be carried out, and any suspect fittings replaced immediately.
