(b) Inspection routine for lifting gear (6 marks)
An inspection should be carried out by a competent person following an established routine:
- Visual examination – Check all components for cracks, distortion, corrosion, pitting, wear, or elongation.
- Wire ropes and chains – Inspect for broken wires, kinks, corrosion, bird-caging, or stretching beyond allowable limits.
- Hooks and shackles – Ensure safety catches are secure, throats not stretched, and no cracks or sharp edges exist.
- Sheaves and blocks – Check for freedom of movement, lubrication, and wear of bearings or grooves.
- Markings and identification – Confirm each item is clearly marked with its Safe Working Load (SWL) and identification number.
- Functional checks – Test brakes, limit switches, and controls on powered equipment to ensure correct operation and safety.

(c) Procedure for recording results of inspection and tests (2 marks)
- All results must be entered in the vessel’s Register of Lifting Appliances and Loose Gear (Form GC/1 or equivalent under MGN 332).
- The register should include date of inspection/test, identification of equipment, name and signature of the competent person, and any defects found or repairs carried out.
- The record must be kept up to date and available for inspection by authorities such as the MCA or classification society surveyor.
