(a) Standing Orders – Procedures in the Event of Severe Flooding in Machinery Spaces (6)
Raise the alarm immediately – notify bridge, emergency response team, and all machinery spaces.
Identify and isolate source – attempt to determine location and cause of flooding; close sea inlets, valves, or pipelines where safe to do so.
Activate bilge pumping arrangements – operate bilge pumps and emergency pumps to control water ingress.
Secure machinery and electrical systems – shut down vulnerable machinery and isolate electrical circuits in flooded areas to prevent damage or fire.
Close watertight doors – ensure subdivision of the space to limit spread of flooding.
Prepare for emergency measures – if flooding cannot be controlled, prepare for possible abandonment or assistance (e.g. transmitting distress, mustering crew).
(b) Positions of the Four Main Watertight Bulkheads (4)
Collision bulkhead – located at the forepart of the vessel, a short distance aft of the bow.
After peak bulkhead – located at the stern, enclosing the after peak tank and steering gear compartment.
Bulkhead forward of machinery space – separates cargo/fore spaces from engine room.
Bulkhead aft of machinery space – separates machinery space from cargo spaces or steering gear compartment aft.
