The OICEW must:
- Maintain full safety precautions – ensure that isolation, lock-out/tag-out, and correct permits (e.g. Permit to Work) are in place.
- Ensure continuous monitoring of machinery and systems – verify that essential services (power, lubrication, cooling, bilge systems, etc.) are not compromised during the activity.
- Coordinate with deck and engine personnel – communicate effectively with the Chief Engineer and other responsible officers to ensure that the operation is conducted safely and efficiently.

(b) Two circumstances requiring immediate notification of the Chief Engineer Officer (4)
The OICEW must notify the Chief Engineer without delay if:
- Any emergency or hazardous situation arises – e.g. fire, flooding, major machinery failure, or risk to ship/crew/environment.
- Any doubt exists regarding the safety of the ship or proper conduct of the engineering watch – e.g. abnormal engine parameters, critical alarms, or unfamiliar situations beyond the OICEW’s authority.
