
- With reference to the Inernational MARPOL Convention Annex V pollution of the sea by garbage:
(a) list SIX special areas that apply to the disposal of garbage;(6)
(b) state the disposal restrictions that are placed on EACH of the following categories of garbage within the various special areas:
(i) operational waste;(1)
(ii) ground-up food waste.(3)
(a) Six special areas under MARPOL Annex V (6)
The following are designated Special Areas where stricter controls apply to garbage disposal:
- The Mediterranean Sea
- The Baltic Sea
- The Black Sea
- The Red Sea
- The Gulfs area (Persian/Arabian Gulf)
- The North Sea
- The Antarctic area (south of latitude 60°S)
- The Wider Caribbean Region including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea
(Any six are acceptable in an exam.)
(b) Disposal restrictions in Special Areas
(i) Operational waste (1 mark)
- Disposal of all operational waste is prohibited in Special Areas.
(ii) Ground-up food waste (3 marks)
- Permitted only if ground or comminuted to particles <25 mm.
- Must be discharged as far as practicable from land, but not less than 12 nautical miles from the nearest land in Special Areas.
- In the Antarctic Area, all food waste discharge is prohibited (even if ground-up).
