CHIEF ENGINEER Unit 5 MARPOL – Garbage Q1 Answer

  1. With reference to MARPOL Annex V (Prevention of Pollution by Garbage from Ships):
    (a) state which vessels require a Garbage Record Book (GRB);(1)
    (b) state the FOUR operations which require an entry in the GRB;(4)
    (c) list the FIVE pieces of specific information required to be entered when an operation stated in part (b) is carried out.(5)

(a) Vessels requiring a Garbage Record Book (1)

A Garbage Record Book must be carried by:

  • All ships of 400 gross tonnage and above, and
  • Ships certified to carry 15 persons or more engaged in voyages to ports or offshore terminals under the jurisdiction of another Party to MARPOL.

(b) Four operations requiring an entry in the GRB (4)

An entry must be made whenever any of the following operations take place:

  1. Discharge of garbage into the sea.
  2. Discharge of garbage to a reception facility ashore.
  3. Incineration of garbage on board.
  4. Accidental or exceptional loss of garbage into the sea.

(c) Five pieces of specific information required in the GRB (5)

When recording any of the above operations, the following details must be entered:

  1. Date and time of the operation.
  2. Position of the ship (latitude and longitude, or port if alongside).
  3. Category of garbage (as per MARPOL Annex V categories).
  4. Estimated amount discharged, incinerated, or lost (in m³).
  5. Signature of the officer in charge of the operation.
