(a) Three main objectives of the ISM Code (6 marks)

The ISM Code sets out international standards for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention. Its three main objectives are:

  1. Safety at sea – To ensure ships are operated safely, reducing the risk of accidents.
  2. Prevention of human injury or loss of life – To protect seafarers and others associated with ship operations.
  3. Avoidance of damage to the environment, especially the marine environment, and to property.

(b) Role of the Designated Person Ashore (DPA) (4 marks)

The DPA acts as the essential link between the company and the ships, ensuring effective implementation of the Safety Management System (SMS). The main roles are:

  2. Ensuring adequate resources and shore-based support are provided for safe ship operation.
  3. Acting as a communication link between ship and shore management.
