- State the purpose of infra red photography, explaining where it could be used as part of a condition monitoring programme.(10)
Purpose of Infra-Red Photography (5 marks)
- Detects abnormal heat patterns – identifies hot spots not visible to the naked eye.
- Locates overheating in electrical equipment – shows loose connections, overloads, or failing insulation.
- Monitors machinery condition – identifies abnormal bearing, motor, or pump heating.
- Assesses thermal insulation – detects heat leakage from tanks, boilers, and accommodation spaces.
- Non-intrusive testing – allows monitoring while machinery is operating, avoiding downtime.
Where it can be used in a Condition Monitoring Programme (5 marks)
- Main switchboards and electrical panels – to find overloaded circuits, loose terminations, or faulty breakers.
- Motors and generators – check for overheating windings or bearings.
- Pumps and compressors – monitor bearing and casing temperatures.
- Shaft bearings and couplings – identify frictional heating before failure.
- Boilers, steam lines, and thermal insulation – locate leaks, poor lagging, or blockages.
