Functions of a Watertight Bulkhead (10 marks)
- Limit flooding – prevent water from spreading through the ship in the event of hull damage.
- Increase survivability – allow the vessel to remain afloat and stable even with one or more compartments flooded.
- Provide structural strength – contribute to the longitudinal and transverse strength of the hull.
- Support decks and equipment – act as vertical stiffeners, supporting deck loads and internal fittings.
- Form collision protection – the forward collision bulkhead provides a barrier against bow damage.
- Form machinery/engine room boundaries – separating propulsion spaces from cargo and accommodation.
- Assist in fire containment – many watertight bulkheads are also fire-resistant, helping to confine fire to one compartment.
- Reduce free surface effect – by subdividing large compartments or tanks, improving stability.
- Aid damage control operations – allow affected spaces to be isolated, pumped out, or repaired without compromising the whole vessel.
- Improve safety of crew and passengers – by ensuring essential areas (e.g. accommodation, escape routes) remain dry and secure during flooding.
