(a) Six MARPOL Annexes currently in force (6 marks)

  1. Annex I – Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Oil.
  2. Annex II – Regulations for the Control of Pollution by Noxious Liquid Substances in Bulk.
  3. Annex III – Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Harmful Substances Carried at Sea in Packaged Form.
  4. Annex IV – Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Sewage from Ships.
  5. Annex V – Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Garbage from Ships.
  6. Annex VI – Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships.

(b) Engines required to comply with NOₓ legislation in MARPOL Annex VI (2 marks)

  • All marine diesel engines with a power output greater than 130 kW, installed on ships built on or after 1 January 2000, or which undergo a major conversion after that date, must comply with the NOₓ Technical Code under Annex VI.

(c) Two other pollutants limited by Annex VI (2 marks)

  1. Sulphur oxides (SOₓ) – regulated by fuel sulphur content limits and Emission Control Areas (ECAs).
  2. Particulate matter & ozone-depleting substances (e.g. CFCs/Halon).
    (Alternatively, you could also answer: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) or greenhouse gases such as CO₂, depending on syllabus scope.)
