(a) The appropriate system to be fitted on a vessel 400 GRT or above (4 marks)
A vessel of 400 gross tonnage or above must be fitted with:
- Oil Filtering (Oily Water Separator) Equipment – capable of reducing oil content to below 15 ppm.
- 15 ppm Bilge Alarm / Oil Content Monitor – gives warning and/or stops discharge if oil content exceeds the limit.
- Automatic Stopping Device or Control System – prevents discharge when >15 ppm is detected.
- Standard Discharge Connection – allows connection to reception facilities ashore.
(b) Documentation required, explaining why it is required (2 marks)
- Oil Record Book (ORB) Part I – Machinery Space Operations
- Required to record all oil transfer and discharge operations.
- Provides a legal record to demonstrate compliance with MARPOL and can be inspected by authorities.
(c) Information to be recorded when pumping bilges overboard through an OWS (4 marks)
The following details must be entered in the Oil Record Book:
- Date, time, and position of the ship (latitude and longitude).
- Quantity discharged (m³ or litres).
- Method of discharge (via OWS and 15 ppm monitor).
- Signature of the officer in charge of the operation.
