    (c) State the name of the international agreement which stipulates that the production and consumption of compounds that deplete ozone in the stratosphere is phased out.(1)

(a) Food Storage Rooms

(i) Danger in vegetable/fruit storage rooms (2 marks)

  • Vegetables and fruit give off carbon dioxide and other gases during respiration.
  • This can lead to oxygen depletion and risk of asphyxiation if the space is entered without ventilation.

(ii) Devices to prevent entrapment (3 marks)

  1. Escape alarm or bell operable from inside the store.
  2. Internal opening handle on the door (even if locked externally).
  3. Means of communication (e.g. telephone or talk-back system) with the machinery space or bridge.

(b) Methods of detecting a refrigeration gas leak (4 marks)

  1. Halide lamp detector (changes flame colour in the presence of halogen gases).
  2. Electronic gas detector (portable “sniffer” devices).
  3. Soap solution test (applied to suspected joints, produces bubbles).
  4. Oil stain or frost formation at the point of leakage (visual inspection).

(c) International agreement (1 mark)

  • The Montreal Protocol (on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer).
