Actions to be Taken if a Fuel Oil Spillage Occurs
- Stop bunkering immediately
- Prevents further oil from being spilled.
- Close bunker valves and secure the manifold
- Isolates the source of the leak.
- Raise the alarm and inform the Master and Chief Engineer
- Ensures the emergency response team is activated.
- Deploy SOPEP equipment (oil booms, absorbent pads, sawdust, etc.)
- Contains and limits the spread of oil on deck or water.
- Plug or seal scuppers and overboard discharges
- Prevents oil from escaping into the sea.
- Collect and clean up oil on deck using absorbents and portable pumps
- Minimises the risk of slips, fires, and further spread.
- Notify port authorities/coastal state as required by MARPOL and local regulations
- Legal requirement for pollution incidents.
- Record the incident in the Oil Record Book and log book
- Provides evidence of actions taken and compliance with regulations.
- Investigate and identify the cause of the spillage
- Prevents recurrence and assists in corrective action.
- Submit a report to company/flag state as per Safety Management System (SMS)
- Ensures proper follow-up and accountability.
