Precautions Before Taking on Bunkers
- Sound and check all bunker tanks
- Reason: To confirm available capacity, ensure no overfilling, and verify tanks are ready to receive fuel.
- Set up correct valve line-up and isolate non-receiving tanks
- Reason: Prevents fuel from entering the wrong tank and avoids contamination or overflow.
- Post scupper plugs and have SOPEP equipment ready
- Reason: Provides immediate protection against accidental spillage into the sea.
- Establish communication signals between ship and bunker supplier
- Reason: Ensures both parties can act quickly in case of an emergency stop or rate change.
- Check bunker delivery documents and agree on quantity, grade, and sulphur content
- Reason: Prevents disputes and ensures compliance with MARPOL Annex VI and fuel requirements.
