  1. With reference to marine diesel oil:
    (a) define EACH of the following terms, stating the unit used in EACH:

(a) Definitions

(i) Density (2 marks)

  • Definition: The mass of a unit volume of fuel at a standard temperature.
  • Unit: kg/m³ at 15 °C.

(ii) Viscosity (2 marks)

  • Definition: A measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow; indicates ease of pumping and atomisation.
  • Unit: cSt (centistokes) at a specified temperature.

(iii) Flash Point (2 marks)

  • Definition: The lowest temperature at which fuel gives off sufficient vapour to ignite momentarily when exposed to a flame.
  • Unit: °C.

(b) Four other items on a Bunker Delivery Note (4 marks)

  1. Name and IMO number of the receiving ship.
  2. Quantity of fuel delivered (in metric tonnes).
  3. Sulphur content (% m/m), confirming compliance with MARPOL Annex VI.
  4. Date, place of bunkering, and details of supplier.
