(a) Six reasons for keeping records (6 marks)
- To provide a historical record of machinery performance and repairs.
- To assist in planning future maintenance and spares requirements.
- To demonstrate compliance with flag state, classification society, and company requirements.
- To help identify trends that indicate developing faults (e.g. rising temperatures, increased consumption).
- To provide evidence in the event of accidents, insurance claims, or disputes.
- To ensure continuity of knowledge between successive engineering watches and crews.
(b) Advantages of an approved maintenance system (4 marks)
- May allow relaxation of some class survey requirements (e.g. survey based on records instead of intrusive inspection).
- Demonstrates to authorities and owners that machinery is maintained systematically and safely.
- Improves operational reliability and reduces risk of breakdowns.
- Facilitates efficient allocation of resources (manpower, time, and spares) through structured planning.
