Maintenance Systems
(a) Purpose of scheduled maintenance (4 marks)
- To carry out planned servicing and overhauls at fixed time or running-hour intervals.
- To ensure machinery operates reliably and efficiently.
- To reduce the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns.
- To comply with manufacturer’s instructions, classification society, and statutory requirements.
(b) Why unscheduled maintenance may be required even with a scheduled system (4 marks)
- Machinery can still fail due to unexpected wear, poor operating conditions, or human error.
- Accidents or incorrect operation may cause sudden damage.
- Contamination (e.g. water in fuel or lubricating oil) can lead to urgent repairs outside the plan.
- Alarms, abnormal trends, or defects may demand immediate attention regardless of schedule.
(c) Why breakdowns should be kept to a minimum (2 marks)
- They can endanger the safety of the vessel, crew, and environment (e.g. propulsion failure, pollution risk).
- They cause costly delays, off-hire, and increased repair/operational expenses.
