- With reference to the engine log books, explain the reasons for recording EACH of the following, stating a possible cause should the readings be outside the normal parameters:
(a) LO Sump level;(4)
(b) cooling water inlet temperature;(3)
(c) inlet manifold air pressure;(3)
Engine Log Books – Reasons & Causes
(a) Lubricating Oil (LO) Sump Level (4 marks)
- Reason for recording:
- To monitor oil consumption and ensure a safe working level for lubrication and cooling.
- Assists in detecting leaks or abnormal oil usage.
- Possible causes if outside normal:
- High level: Water ingress from leaking cooler, fuel dilution, or overfilling.
- Low level: Leakage, excessive consumption due to blow-by, or poor topping-up practices.
(b) Cooling Water Inlet Temperature (3 marks)
- Reason for recording:
- To ensure efficient combustion and prevent thermal stresses; confirms proper control by thermostatic valves.
- Possible causes if outside normal:
- High: Faulty thermostatic valve, blocked sea water cooler, or pump failure.
- Low: Thermostatic valve stuck open, excess cooling water flow, or cooler bypass left open.
(c) Inlet Manifold Air Pressure (3 marks)
- Reason for recording:
- To verify proper turbocharger performance and adequate scavenge air supply for combustion.
- Possible causes if outside normal:
- Low: Turbocharger fouling, air filter blockage, leaking scavenge trunk, or damaged compressor/turbine blades.
- High (less common): Scavenge space flooding with oil or water, or incorrect settings on auxiliary blowers.
