(a) Reasons for keeping a log (6 marks)
- Provides a continuous and permanent record of the operation and condition of machinery for reference and trend analysis.
- Supplies evidence for classification societies, flag state authorities, insurance, and owners in case of accidents, disputes, or surveys.
- Assists with planned maintenance, fault-finding, and voyage performance monitoring.
(b) Person responsible for compiling the log (1 mark)
- The duty engineer/officer of the watch.
(c) When the log should be compiled and signed (1 mark)
- At the end of each watch, written up and signed by the engineer in charge of that watch.
(d) Action to be taken if a mistake is made (2 marks)
- Rule through the incorrect entry with a single line so it remains legible.
- Write the correction clearly alongside, and initial the amendment — erasures or overwriting are not permitted.
