(a) Reasons for keeping a log (6 marks)

  1. Provides a continuous and permanent record of the operation and condition of machinery for reference and trend analysis.
  2. Supplies evidence for classification societies, flag state authorities, insurance, and owners in case of accidents, disputes, or surveys.
  3. Assists with planned maintenance, fault-finding, and voyage performance monitoring.

(b) Person responsible for compiling the log (1 mark)

  • The duty engineer/officer of the watch.

(c) When the log should be compiled and signed (1 mark)

  • At the end of each watch, written up and signed by the engineer in charge of that watch.

(d) Action to be taken if a mistake is made (2 marks)

  • Rule through the incorrect entry with a single line so it remains legible.
  • Write the correction clearly alongside, and initial the amendment — erasures or overwriting are not permitted.
