Responsibilities of the off-going duty engineer
(a) Fuel service tanks (2 marks)
- Check and maintain adequate fuel level in service tanks for the next watch.
- Ensure correct type of fuel in use, heating/settling arrangements are satisfactory, and drains are checked for water or sludge.
(b) Oily Water Separator (2 marks)
- Confirm the OWS is operational, properly set up, and any overboard discharge valves are correctly secured.
- Record operations in the Oil Record Book and report any defects or alarms.
(c) Potable water tanks (2 marks)
- Monitor tank levels to ensure sufficient supply of potable water.
- Verify that pumps, chlorination/sterilisation systems, and supply arrangements are in good order.
(d) Machinery space defect book (2 marks)
- Enter any defects, abnormalities, or maintenance requirements observed during the watch.
- Brief the relieving engineer on outstanding issues and ensure follow-up actions are noted.
(e) Main engine sump level (2 marks)
- Check and record the lubricating oil sump level, ensuring it is within safe operating limits.
- Inform the relieving engineer of any consumption, top-ups made, or abnormalities detected.
