State the action to be taken by the watch keeping engineer in the event of EACH of the following:
(a) flooding;(6)
(b) failure of main propulsion machinery. (4)
(a) Flooding (6 marks)
Actions by the watchkeeping engineer:
- Raise the alarm immediately – inform bridge/master and engine control room.
- Identify source of flooding (sea inlet, pump, pipeline, stern gland, tank, etc.).
- Isolate the leak where possible (shut valves, stop pumps, use emergency bilge suction).
- Start bilge pumps or emergency fire/bilge pump to control water ingress.
- Take safety precautions – secure electrical equipment in flooded area to avoid electric shock/fire risk.
- Report situation continuously to bridge/master and assist with damage control measures (closing watertight doors, preparing for possible abandonment if uncontrolled).
(b) Failure of main propulsion machinery (4 marks)
Actions by the watchkeeping engineer:
Keep bridge/master updated on progress, estimated time to restore propulsion, and any limitations.
Inform bridge immediately – so navigational action can be taken.
Identify cause – check alarms, gauges, trip indications, and machinery condition (fuel, lube oil, cooling, scavenge air, governor, etc.).
Take corrective action – attempt restart or bring standby machinery online if possible.
