(a) FOUR precautions to ensure the safety of personnel (4 marks)
- Inform the duty officer/bridge before entering the unmanned machinery space.
- Ensure adequate ventilation and lighting are provided before entry.
- Carry a means of communication (e.g. portable radio/telephone) and protective equipment.
- Work in pairs where possible, or ensure a stand-by person is aware of the entry and can respond in an emergency.
(b) FOUR notices to be posted at the entrance of unmanned machinery spaces (4 marks)
- “Unmanned Machinery Space – Authorised Personnel Only”.
- “Report to Duty Engineer/Officer Before Entry”.
- “Ensure Communication is Maintained” (carry portable radio/phone).
- “Switch Off Machinery Before Maintenance/Entry” or equivalent safety instruction (isolation notice).
(Other acceptable notices may include emergency contact instructions, PPE requirements, or rescue procedures.)
(c) Meaning of the term Machinery Space (2 marks)
- A machinery space is any space onboard a vessel containing:
- Main and auxiliary machinery essential for propulsion and ship operations,
- Including boilers, diesel engines, turbines, generators, pumps, compressors, and associated systems.
- Defined under SOLAS/IMO as those compartments housing the ship’s propulsion plant and its essential auxiliaries.
