Hotel Service Unit 3 UMS Q2 – Answer

  1. With reference to unmanned machinery spaces:
    (a) explain why machinery spaces should be visited on a regular basis;(2)
    (b) explain how the human senses are used to monitor conditions in a machinery space;(4)
    (c) outline the procedure to be adopted if a person wishes to enter a machinery space outside normal working hours.(4)

(a) Why machinery spaces should be visited on a regular basis (2 marks)

  • To confirm that machinery is operating correctly, as remote monitoring systems may not detect all developing faults.
  • To allow the engineer to identify early signs of malfunction (leaks, overheating, abnormal noises, vibration) before they become serious.

(b) How the human senses are used to monitor conditions in a machinery space (4 marks)

  • Sight: Detecting leaks of oil/water/steam, abnormal vibrations, smoke, abnormal gauge readings, or loose fittings.
  • Hearing: Identifying unusual noises from pumps, bearings, engines, or rotating machinery.
  • Smell: Detecting fuel, gas, burning, electrical insulation failure, or chemical odours.
  • Touch: Feeling for abnormal heat, excessive vibration, or loose fittings (applied carefully with safety in mind).

(c) Procedure to be adopted if a person wishes to enter a machinery space outside normal working hours (4 marks)

  1. Inform the duty engineer or officer of the watch before entering.
  2. Record the entry in the logbook or UMS entry register.
  3. Take a portable communication device or establish means of contact with the bridge/ECR.
  4. On completion, report departure from the machinery space and sign out, ensuring continuity of watchkeeping and personal safety.
