(iii) the main and auxiliary Machinery Maintenance Record Book.(2)

(a) Where the watch should be handed over on a vessel fitted with a UMS system, with reasons (2 marks)

  • The watch should be handed over in the Engine Control Room (ECR).
  • Reason: The ECR contains the alarm panels, system status indicators, and monitoring equipment for the UMS system. This ensures the relieving engineer is fully aware of the plant condition, alarms, and any ongoing issues before taking over responsibility.

(b) Responsibilities of the duty engineer

(i) Systems Status Board (3 marks)

  • Ensure the board is kept up to date with the actual condition of all machinery and systems.
  • Record any equipment taken out of service, under maintenance, or operating abnormally.
  • Use the board to brief the relieving engineer during handover, ensuring continuity of safe operation.

(ii) Oil Record Book (3 marks)

  • Accurately record all oil transfers, discharges, and operations (e.g. bilge pumping, sludge discharge, bunkering, fuel/lube oil transfers).
  • Ensure entries are made at the time of the operation, signed by the duty engineer, and countersigned by the Chief Engineer.
  • Maintain compliance with MARPOL requirements, as the Oil Record Book is a statutory document subject to inspection.

(iii) Main and Auxiliary Machinery Maintenance Record Book (2 marks)

  • Record all maintenance carried out (routine and corrective) on main and auxiliary machinery.
  • Ensure that details are accurate and up to date, so that future maintenance planning, classification requirements, and defect tracking are properly documented.
