(a) Five precautions before the vessel enters the dock (5 marks)
Trim and stability adjusted – vessel trimmed slightly by stern, stability verified within safe limits.
Tanks and bilges prepared – ballast, fuel, and water levels reduced or distributed as per dockmaster’s instructions.
Sea suctions, overboard valves, and stern tube glands checked – ensure all are shut and in good condition.
Loose gear secured – deck cargo, stores, and equipment properly lashed to prevent movement.
Fire and emergency equipment available – fire pumps and hoses ready, crew briefed for docking operations.
(b) Five inspections/precautions before re-flooding the dock (5 marks)
All underwater work completed – inspection of hull plating, rudder, propeller, sea chests, and fittings finished.
All openings closed – sea chests, sea valves, manholes, and drain plugs refitted and tested tight.
Dock blocks and shores checked – ensure no tools, equipment, or debris remain under vessel.
Safety of personnel ensured – dock workers and ship’s crew clear of underwater areas before flooding.
Communication established with dockmaster – coordinated flooding procedure agreed and emergency plan in place.
