
- With reference to the MARPOL Convention Annex I:
(a) list SIX circumstances under which an entry must be made in the Oil Record Book;(6)
(b) detail the specific entries that must be made in the Oil Record Book following a routine overboard discharge of machinery space bilge water.(4)
(a) Six circumstances under which an entry must be made in the Oil Record Book (ORB) (6)
An entry must be made whenever any of the following occur:
- Ballasting or cleaning of oil fuel tanks.
- Discharge of dirty ballast or cleaning water from oil fuel tanks.
- Collection, transfer, and disposal of oil residues (sludge).
- Discharge overboard of bilge water through an oily water separator.
- Accidental or exceptional discharge of oil or oily mixture.
- Failure or breakdown of pollution prevention equipment (e.g. OWS, oil content monitor, alarms).
(Other valid entries could include loading of fuel/oil, internal transfer of oil, or disposal of residues to reception facilities.)
(b) Specific entries required after a routine overboard discharge of machinery space bilge water (4)
The following details must be recorded in the ORB:
- Date, time, and position of the ship (latitude & longitude) at the start and completion of discharge.
- Quantity discharged (m³ or litres) and rate of discharge.
- Method of discharge – via the approved Oily Water Separator (15 ppm equipment), including confirmation that the oil content monitor was in operation.
- Signature of the officer in charge of the operation.
