  1. With reference to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), state the requirements for the routine testing of steering gears:
    (a) prior to sailing from port;(5)
    (b) at three monthly intervals while the vessel is proceeding on passage.(5)

(a) Prior to sailing from port (5 marks)

SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 26 requires that:

  1. Main steering gear must be tested through its full movement (hard over to hard over).
  2. Auxiliary steering gear must also be tested to ensure correct operation.
  3. Means of communication between the navigating bridge and steering compartment must be tested.
  4. Emergency power supply for steering gear (if fitted) must be tested and confirmed operational.
  5. Checks on linkages, alarms, and indicators to ensure they are functioning correctly.

(b) At three-monthly intervals while on passage (5 marks)

  1. Emergency steering gear must be operated from within the steering gear compartment.
  2. Direct communication between bridge and steering gear compartment must be tested.
  3. Emergency steering drills must be conducted, including changeover from remote to local control.
  4. Testing of operation by alternative power supplies (if applicable).
  5. Familiarisation of crew with emergency procedures and steering arrangements must be verified.
