- Rules for navigation – Including the COLREGs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea).
- Carriage of cargoes – Safe handling, stowage, and carriage of cargoes, including dangerous goods.
- Maritime safety procedures and requirements – Operational practices to prevent accidents.
- Hydrographic information and navigational aids – Improving charts, lights, signals, and other aids to safe navigation.
- Search and rescue (SAR) and maritime security – Coordinating international SAR efforts and addressing security threats.

- Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) – Focuses on preventing and controlling marine pollution.
