(a) Definition of a Bulkhead (2 marks)
A bulkhead is a vertical partition or wall built inside a ship, extending either transversely or longitudinally, constructed of steel or equivalent material.
It divides the vessel into watertight or non-watertight compartments to strengthen the hull and improve safety.
(b) Functions of Bulkheads (8 marks)
Provide watertight subdivision – limit flooding and improve survivability if the hull is breached.
Contribute to fire protection – act as fire-resisting divisions between compartments.
Add strength and rigidity – increase the structural strength of the hull girder and resist racking stresses.
Support decks and fittings – serve as strong vertical supports for decks, machinery, and equipment.
Separate different compartments – e.g. cargo spaces, machinery spaces, accommodation, tanks.
Reduce free surface effect – by subdividing large tanks/compartments, improving stability.
Assist in sound and vibration isolation – reduce transmission between machinery spaces and accommodation.
Provide safety and organisation – facilitate damage control, maintenance, and safe operation of the ship.
