(a) FIVE Monthly Checks on Firefighting Equipment (5 marks)
- Visual inspection – ensure all equipment is correctly stowed, accessible, and in good condition.
- Hoses and nozzles – check for damage, leaks, or blockages.
- Portable extinguishers – confirm location, pressure gauge in green zone, seals intact, no corrosion.
- Breathing apparatus sets – check air cylinder pressure, face mask condition, and readiness for use.
- Emergency lighting and alarms – test proper operation of fire detection, alarm systems, and emergency escape lighting.
(b) FIVE Yearly Checks on Firefighting Equipment (5 marks)
- Hydraulic pressure testing of fire hoses and extinguishers as per regulations.
- Discharge testing of a sample of portable extinguishers to confirm performance.
- Overhaul of breathing apparatus sets – including flow test, gauge calibration, and cylinder hydrostatic testing (as due).
- Inspection of fixed systems – such as CO₂ or foam installations, checking weight of CO₂ bottles, and integrity of release mechanisms.
- Surveyor/authorised service provider inspection – annual inspection recorded in ship’s safety certificates (MCA/IMO compliance).
