Planned Maintenance System (PMS)
(a) Purpose of a planned maintenance system (4 marks)
- To ensure machinery and equipment are maintained systematically at correct intervals.
- To minimise risk of machinery breakdown and improve reliability/safety.
- To optimise spare parts and manpower use by planning ahead.
- To provide documentary evidence of maintenance for owners, classification societies, and flag state.
(b) Parameters on which planned maintenance may be based (3 marks)
- Running hours of machinery.
- Calendar time (e.g. monthly, annually).
- Condition monitoring (e.g. vibration analysis, oil analysis, wear down measurements).
(c) Influence of an approved PMS on classification society requirements (3 marks)
- If the PMS is approved by the classification society, survey intervals may be extended.
- Certain items may be surveyed by chief engineer’s records rather than direct inspection by a surveyor.
- Reduces frequency of intrusive inspections, as long as records demonstrate that maintenance is being properly carried out.
