- With reference to the engine log books, explain the reasons for recording EACH of the following:
(a) running hours;(2)
(b) lubricating oil consumption;(2)
(c) fuel consumption;(2)
(d) salanity or chloride content of the engine jacket cooling water;(2)
(e) water content of lubricating oil.(2)
Engine Log Book – Reasons for Recording
(a) Running hours (2 marks)
- To determine when machinery has reached its maintenance intervals.
- Provides evidence of operational time for planned maintenance, class, and survey purposes.
(b) Lubricating oil consumption (2 marks)
- Abnormal increases may indicate wear, leakage, or combustion of oil.
- Helps monitor trends for machinery condition and informs replenishment requirements.
(c) Fuel consumption (2 marks)
- Used to assess engine performance and efficiency.
- Required for voyage planning, cost control, and compliance with environmental reporting (e.g. MARPOL, EU MRV, IMO DCS).
(d) Salinity or chloride content of the engine jacket cooling water (2 marks)
- Detects sea water ingress from leaking coolers or liners, which can cause corrosion.
- Ensures treatment and corrective action are taken before serious damage occurs.
(e) Water content of lubricating oil (2 marks)
- High water levels reduce lubrication quality and can lead to bearing failure.
- Recording trends allows early detection of cooler leaks or condensation ingress.
